Aileen enjoyed a celebratory meal with her Girlguiding friends to mark her retirement

A much-loved Helensburgh Brownie leader has retired after more than 35 years of volunteering with Girlguiding.

Aileen Baird’s guiding journey began when her daughter turned seven and joined 2nd Helensburgh Brownies.

Aileen and her Brownies helped raise funds for the local foodbank

Aileen helped out at meetings, completing her assistant guiders warrant in 1991 before going on to become an assistant leader of the unit, and then leader in March 2004.

She also served as district commissioner between 2014 and 2019.

Celebrations

Aileen marked the end of her time as Brown Owl by organising a sleepover for the Brownies during one of the warmest weekends in the summer – with a festive theme as Christmas is her favourite time of year.

Aileen was also celebrated by her unit at a special celebration evening at the end of term, and with a meal out with her Guiding friends on Friday, September 18.

Fun and thanks

Reflecting on her Guiding career, Aileen said: “It has been a pleasure having girls join the unit and seeing them grow by having fun, making new friends, joining in with all the activities and trying new adventures as they spend their time with us.

“I could not have achieved all of this without the help of the many leaders who joined the unit or who helped organise our many sleepovers, pack holidays, camping and special events over the years, and the parents who offered their help when needed.

“I had my first camping experience a couple of years ago and also my first international trip. You’re never too old to try something new.”

What’s next for Aileen?

Although she has retired as Brown Owl, Aileen isn’t saying goodbye to Guiding just yet. She has joined the Trefoil Guild, allowing her to continue her Guiding journey in a new way. She’s also an active volunteer with St Joseph’s Church and Christian Aid.
