Amsterdam adventure for Clydebank Girl Guides

A group of fourteen smiling girls and young women, members of the 6th Clydebank Guides and Rangers, pose together on a boat in front of a scenic Amsterdam canal. Behind them are traditional Dutch buildings and houseboats, with trees lining the water. Some of the girls are wearing matching red hoodies or sweatshirts tied around their waists, and a few wear Guiding-themed shirts. The mood is cheerful and celebratory.

Jet-setting Girl Guides headed to Amsterdam to take part in a huge treasure hunt.

The 6th Clydebank Guides and Rangers ventured to the Dutch capital during the Easter break, where they enjoyed an international wide game.

They joined 600 Brownies, Guides and Rangers from Girlguiding Scotland for the one-day adventure, and extended their stay to enjoy other outings too.

Fun-filled challenges

The 14 girls, who were supported by six volunteers, were tasked with a series of activities – each worth a certain number of points. The challenges included taking photos of places they visited, using every form of public transport, sharing friendship bracelets with new friends, recreating Van Gogh paintings and much more.

Lauren, 12, said: “I was so proud to take part in this adventure. Making my promise outside Anne Frank’s house felt surreal — I loved the whole trip.”

Orla, 13, summed it up by saying: “It was the adventure of a lifetime!”

Fundraising

The girls worked very hard to drum up almost £3,000 for the trip, raising the cash by hosting bingo nights, selling unwanted clothes, and organising a family-friendly race night.

A group of 20 smiling girls and volunteers from the 6th Clydebank Guides and Rangers pose together indoors at Glasgow Airport. They are all wearing matching bright pink hoodies, with a few also wearing neckerchiefs or holding personal items like a phone or stuffed toy owl. Two young women are seated at the front on a tiled floor, while the rest stand on steps behind them. Overhead signs for emergency exits and airport facilities are visible in the background.

Janice Blair, leader of the 6th Clydebank Guides, said: “Our Amsterdam adventure was an incredible experience for the girls.

“They worked so hard to raise the funds for the trip, but all the hard work was worth it as they had a ball.

“We had girls who had never flown before, some had never been abroad and, for many, it was their first international trip with Girlguiding.

“As volunteers, it’s amazing to give girls these new experiences and to see them all feeling proud of themselves.”
