A long-serving member of Girlguiding has reached a remarkable milestone — 40 years of dedicated service.

Hardgate resident Lorna Hamilton – who is county commissioner for Girlguiding Dunbartonshire – was surprised with a special celebratory dinner organised by fellow volunteers to mark four decades of exceptional commitment.

From Brownies to county commissioner

Lorna’s Guiding journey began in 1st Bearsden Brownies, before progressing to 1st Bearsden Guides and becoming a young leader. After returning home to Bearsden following a period working away, she was invited to an anniversary event at 1st Bearsden Guides – and within a week had joined 3rd Bearsden Guides as a leader in training. She went on to lead the unit for the next 30 years.

Throughout her time in Guiding, Lorna has been passionate about providing outdoor adventures, camping opportunities and international trips — experiences she loved as a young member and was determined to pass on to future generations.

She has held a number of roles within Girlguiding Dunbartonshire and beyond, including local commissioner and international advisor, and currently serves as chair of the Property Committee for Girlguiding Scotland.

‘Unforgettable experiences’

Reflecting on the surprise celebration, Lorna said: “I was absolutely taken aback by the lovely surprise. Girlguiding has been such an important part of my life for so many years – it has given me wonderful friendships, unforgettable experiences and countless happy memories.

“I loved Guiding as a young person, especially the camping and outdoor activities, and it’s been such a privilege to help provide those magical experiences for our young people as an adult volunteer.

“Being invited to serve as county commissioner for Girlguiding Dunbartonshire has been a real honour. Supporting our volunteers and watching girls flourish is what keeps me passionate about Guiding. I’m very grateful to everyone who made the evening so special and for all the support I’ve had throughout my Guiding journey.”

Lorna will soon step down at county commissioner after five years in the role, and the search has begun to appoint a new county commissioner.
